The Onboard Experience

HX, formerly the expedition division of Hurtigruten, caters to travelers who are seeking opportunities for learning and personal growth. As a leader in exploration cruising, the company's nimble vessels and skilled crews offer nature-based experiences in places like Antarctica, the Arctic, Alaska and the Galapagos Islands. On every voyage, an expedition team leads exciting activities off the ship and provides enriching presentations on history, geology and biology on board.

Experts in Exploration
On all HX cruises, handpicked experts from a range of fields will lead intriguring tours, including hikes, kayaking and more.

HX's expedition team members come from all over the world, offering a mix of unique interests and colorful backgrounds. They have decades of exploration knowledge and are specialists on the destination you are visiting. Several have held respected posts within the scientific and research community. Among them are marine and wildlife biologists, social anthropologists, oceanographers, archaeologists, ecologists or glaciologists.

The expedition team will also organize a range of activities on board, including science experiments, art workshops, photography tips, meditation sessions, yoga classes and more. They will lead dynamic lectures and engaging talks, offering a treasure trove of interesting facts and enlightening stories.

Each team member is deeply committed to sustainability and is trained to protect you, the wildlife and the delicate habitats explored. The team’s passion for travel, love for the planet and desire to share knowledge will make your trip even more meaningful.

The Science Center
Discover your inner scientist with HX’s onboard Science & Education program, which helps guests learn more about the people, places and wildlife of each destination. At the heart of this program is the Science Center, a state-of-the-art facility on every HX ship that is equipped with cutting edge technology and equipment.

The Science Center gives the expedition team the opportunity to deepen your knowledge with hands-on, immersive experiences. This is also a place for scientists and visiting researchers to work. In addition to science equipment, the center also includes museum-type curated collections, a small library and specialty areas for workshops in photography, biology and more.

Guests have the opportunity to participate in Citizen Science Projects -- research activities that involve volunteers, or “citizen scientists,” working with established professionals. You’ll upload real-time data and observations on wildlife and nature to live projects, contributing to valuable research about our planet.

Opportunities for Relaxation & Activity
All of HX's ships have an indoor gym and outdoor hot tub, and most include a sauna with a view. The hybrid electric–powered vessels feature an outdoor running track and heated infinity pool, too. Some ships also have a Wellness Center, where you can relax with a therapeutic scrub or massage.

Each ship boasts an observation lounge where you'll find large panoramic windows, comfortable seats and binoculars so you can view the landscapes and wildlife. Most ships also have multiple bars and lounges.

Savor Regional Flavors
Enjoy delicious meals inspired by regional specialties. Meals are prepared by skilled chefs who offer an impressive range of traditional fare and modern fusions. The expedition team may also give presentations covering the cultural significance of the area's food and agriculture.
